Kit Wright re-tells the story of the conniving and mischievous character of ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ who tries to trick a young wife into handing over her first born child, will he succeed?

Isabella, a young Miller’s daughter, falls in love with a Prince. Desperately wanting to become his wife, she seeks approval from the King who tells her she must prove worthy of his son’s hand in marriage. With this, she lies and says she can turn straw into gold. One lonely evening locked in the castle, Isabella is visited by a little, strange man who tells her he will spin the straw into gold, but for a price. On the third visit, having nothing left to offer him, the little, strange man – Rumpelstiltskin - tells Isabella that she must give him her first born child. Scared and sorrowful, Isabella (once given birth to her first born child) is visited yet again by the conniving character and he has one last offer; she can keep her child if she finds out his name.

A part I particularly liked about this re-telling of a classic fairy tale is the way each character’s personality and mood came across through effective descriptions.

Through the use of minimal illustrations, Wright re-tells the story through the use of similes and uses alliteration for effect. This would be useful to 7-11 year olds who are developing their language skills through their writing. The way Wright uses description definitely helps us gauge how each and every character feels throughout the tale. We see Rumpelstiltskin get his comeuppance at the end, reiterating that good overcomes evil (something that would be effective in teaching 5-7 year olds about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ during story time).
