About the Author
Churchill [1871-1947] was an American novelist, essayist, poet, artist, and politician. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. After being an editor of the Army and Navy Journal and serving as an officer, he resigned from the navy to write full time. His first books were historical fiction, later he wrote on contemporary subjects. His second book, Richard Carvel, was a phenomenal best seller—about two million copies were bought. His next books, The Crisis and The Crossing, were also best sellers. Some critics cite him as the most influential American writer who wrote in the naturalist style.

He served in the New Hampshire legislature, and unsuccessfully ran for governor. He painted watercolor landscapes. Some of his paintings are in the Cornish Colony Museum in Windsor, VT, Hood Museum of Art, Hanover, NH, and Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish, NH.

Churchill met and corresponded with, the British Winston Churchill who decided to sign his own works "Winston S. Churchill" (S. for Spencer).
