by James Hilton

This book is definitely not one of Hilton.'s better works. The book almost reads like a script of a very dated B-grade movie than a novel filed with the beautiful prose that I look forward to in a Hilton book. Most of the book builds up the romantic tangles of the protagonists and then there is a murder mystery to close things off. It's all pretty unsatisfactory on the whole.

I adore James Hilton and most of my earlier reads of his works have a lingering taste of pleasure. This book misses out on a lot of the points which have made me enjoy his books so..Characterization is the chief fault. It's not that Hilton ever gave in to extensive psycho- analysis of his best characters but he somehow established a closer link with them.Do I know Mr. Chips? Probably notbut do I feel connected to him?Absolutely.Same goes for that heroic protest in "And now good bye"or Smithy in "Random harvest".I could not attach myself to any of the people in this book and hence had to rely solely on the plot to move me forward but that was just too dated and thin.

The book however did have its moments which is why I don't discard it utterly but this isn't a book worth spending much time on.
